Unusual Door Sizes

My latest rambling was inspired by reading a desperate post on a forum about a single lady being ripped off by a so called joiner fitting a door so badly for her that she is now out of pocket and with a door that is going to need to be renewed....again.

The issue for this lady arose because the joiner didn't relaise he could obtain properly sized doors for this particular property rather than trying to cut a door to size, it would have been so easy to obtain the correct albeit unusual door size and avoid these issues.

The lady explained over the phone what she required to a joiner she had never met, the joiner basically arrived with a door having never measured the opening and proceeded to fit it by cutting it down and exposing the core, he also decorated the door... but not very well.

Virtually all internal doors are over veneered, they are perfectly stable and suited for their purpose, they also generally have a semi solid core, not hollow, all fine until someone doesn't know what they are doing, give us a call for totally free advice beforehand.

One piece solid individual timber section internal doors in whatever timber are virtually never available or fitted unless absolutely unavoidable as they are expensive.

Most of the internal doors on the market only have about a 6mm edge, they can and should be trimmed equally but they can be cut down and the edge refitted alas not while on site, there are various unusual size doors within the internal doors categories.

Extra Wide Internal Doors

Many people nowadays have wider than standard openings which means they will require non standard internal doors, this can sometimes be due to disability access which means doors are wider than 838mm or it may be that you have an older property with a slightly odd size door opening.

So instead of altering a door and cutting it down, why not go for a bespoke door made to your specific door size, saving the hassle of cutting it down. We have many various styles and finishes to choose from and most of them can be made up to 1200mm wide making a single door as wide as a double door.

So whether you are looking for an extra wide door, a short internal door or even both, our bespoke option is the perfect option for you and all at very reasonable cost.

Some tips:

Measure the opening yourself at the top, the middle and the bottom, take the widest size and allow 4mm for clearance between the door edge and the frame, measure the height from the floor to under the frame above your head, apologies for the terminology but I dont want to use trade terms and confuse you.

Always quote the sizes in millimetres (mm) not a mixture of mm and centimetres (cm)

Some doors are seen as metric size doors meaning that they are found in lots of new homes that were constructed from about the 1970's until now, they are readily available at the site mentioned below and are always 2040mm high, the widths vary from 526mm, 626mm, 726mm, 826mm and 926mm widths, always 40mm thick or 45mm for fire doors.

Only ever measure the door for the thickness as the old door may have been badly fitted.

Just by doing this you can at least be sure when talking to someone about doors that you are not a complete novice.

Never pay anyone anything other than a deposit for fitting doors or fitting anything else for that matter and for more advice give us a call, its free..
