Hand Forged Door Ironmongery.

The word “ironmonger”  generally refers to someone who both manufactures, and sells products made of iron. Although, in recent times, the term has been expanded somewhat to include the materials such as steel, brass and other metals.

Tradition in Trading in iron products has been going on for centuries. In fact, historians believe that the origins of this market can be traced as far back as 1200 BC, when the first recorded use of metal fusion to create useful hardware began.

Throughout the middle ages, ironmongery transformed into a highly prized skill, that was often used for the construction of weapons are torture devices. Right up until the early 1800’s, ironmongers, or blacksmiths as they became known, were important members of the society.

All changed with industrial revolution. There was less and less Ironmongers and the trade became very unpopular in the 20th century. Fortunately there are companies trying to restore our knowledge and create products inspired by styles and techniques from the past.

DirectDoors have a pleasure to offer three different styles of antique inspired door furniture: BLACK ANTIQUE, BEESWAX and PEWTER.

The BEESWAX finish - for internal use - is the most authentic finish for steel. When our highly skilled blacksmiths have finished forging each product the colours left in the steel range from blue to deep red ochre. To preserve these beautiful colours and the texture from the hammer and anvil, we apply pure beeswax. This gives a subtle, matt richness to the metal and offers excellent protection when products are fitted internally and properly maintained.

Our ANTIQUE BLACK furniture is baked in a high-temperature oven giving it an attractive, durable and corrosion-resistant finish which is low maintenance and can be used internally or externally. It is resistant to moisture so can be used in bathrooms and damp conditions.

PEWTER finish is elegant and beautifully highlights the texture of the steel. Stylish and modern, it is equally suited to a contemporary home as well as a period property.

It has excellent anti-corrosion properties and we recommend that the ironmongery is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth once a month. This will remove harmful deposits and restore it to its original condition. Never use any form of metal cleaner or aerosol spray. All moving parts should be oiled prior to fitting and periodically afterwards.
