Interior Door Trends for 2026: The Styles Transforming UK Homes

Interior doors can have a much bigger impact on a room than people sometimes realise. As well as separating one space from another, the right door can bring in more light, add colour and texture, or simply help pull the rest of the room together.
For 2026, we're seeing a mixture of familiar favourites and a few newer ideas coming through. Black industrial-style doors are still going strong, oak remains one of the most popular choices, reeded and textured glass is appearing more often, and cleaner, simpler door designs continue to gain ground.
What's also changing is the way these styles are being used. They aren't limited to standard hinged doors anymore. Many of the same looks can now be used for double doors, sliding doors, pocket doors, folding doors and room dividers, which gives you far more options when planning a room.

Black Internal Doors Aren't Going Anywhere

Black internal doors have gone from being quite an unusual choice to one of the most recognisable looks in modern interiors.
They work particularly well against white, cream and other neutral wall colours, where the darker outline makes the doorway stand out and gives the room a sharper, more architectural feel.
Black-framed glazed doors are especially popular because you get the impact of the black frame without blocking light between rooms. They can work particularly well in kitchens, hallways, home offices and open-plan spaces.
At DirectDoors.com, you'll find a wide choice of Black Internal Doors as well as our Industrial & Loft Style Doors, so there are plenty of ways to get the look without every door having to be exactly the same.
The Soho Black Internal Door with Clear Reeded Glass, for example, combines a slim black design with textured glazing, while collections such as Camden, Brixton, Dalston and Shoreditch each offer a slightly different take on the industrial style.
Best suited to: modern kitchens, hallways, home offices, dining rooms and open-plan living spaces.

Walnut and Darker Timber Tones Are Worth Another Look

Lighter woods have dominated interiors for a while, but there is still plenty of room for darker and richer timber finishes.
Walnut works particularly well with warm neutral colours, natural stone, brass fittings and softer lighting. It gives a room warmth and depth without being as stark as a black door.
It's also a useful middle ground if you want the door to make a statement but still want to see the natural grain and variation of the timber.
For a more contemporary room, a flush walnut door can work particularly well. The shape is very simple, but the grain gives it enough detail to stop it looking plain.
Walnut is also now available across a wider choice of standard internal doors, double doors, sliding systems and pocket doors, so the same finish can be carried through different areas of the house.

Simpler Door Designs Are Becoming More Popular

Not every door needs lots of panels, mouldings or detail.
Cleaner interiors have naturally led to an increase in simpler door designs, particularly flush doors and understated panel styles.
Our Flush Interior Doors include oak, walnut, painted and laminate finishes, and they're particularly useful when there is already plenty happening elsewhere in the room. Rather than competing with feature walls, flooring or furniture, the door becomes a quieter part of the overall design.
That doesn't necessarily mean choosing something completely plain.
A Shaker-style door gives you a similar clean look but with enough panel detail to add some character. It's also a good choice for older properties where a completely flat contemporary door might feel a little too modern.
The result is a style that can sit somewhere between traditional and contemporary without looking out of place in either.

Choosing the Right Internal Door for Your Home

Trends are useful for ideas, but the best choice is always the door that actually works for your room and the way you use it.
A few things are worth thinking about before you decide:
Light – Would a glazed door help bring daylight into a darker hallway or adjoining room?
Privacy – Do you need a solid door, or would frosted or textured glass give you enough privacy?
Space – Is there enough room for a conventional door to swing open, or would a sliding or pocket door make better use of the space?
Style – Do you prefer the contrast of black, the warmth of oak or walnut, or the cleaner appearance of a flush or Shaker door?
Consistency – Could you use solid, glazed, double and sliding versions of a similar design in different parts of the house?
It's worth thinking about the doors while you're planning the rest of the room rather than treating them as something to choose at the very end. They take up a surprisingly large amount of visual space and can make a real difference to the finished look.
